YOUR HEATING SYSTEM ISN’T AS EFFICIENT AS YOU THINK

When the temperature starts dropping, you’re going to rely on your home’s heating system to keep you and your family comfortable. But have you thought of the possibility it’s not operating as efficiently as it should? Probably not. Bryan’s Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., a Wichita HVAC company, has a few quick tips on why your heating system isn’t efficient and what you can do about it.

WAYS YOUR HVAC HEATING ISN’T EFFICIENT

When we think of inefficiency, we often think of blatantly obvious causes such as noises from the furnace or breaks or punctures in the ductwork. But many times your HVAC system loses heating efficiency in more subtle ways, some that you may even contribute to.

DUCTWORK

Many homes feature traditional duct work to bring conditioned air and comfort throughout the structure. But as ducts wind their way throughout your home, they’re notorious for losing heat and energy, especially at joints between two sections and in uninsulated spaces. Additionally, ductwork can become dirty or clogged over time if the air filters aren’t regularly changed in the furnace.

HOT & COLD GAME

Your heating system works in cycles, but these cycles can be sped up if you and others living in your home participate in what we call “the hot and cold game”. You know how this game goes — the heating system turns on, warms the home to a comfortable temperature then turns off. Except with forced air systems, the conditioned air cools and causes you or someone else to go adjust the thermostat again. By adjusting the thermostat before the system automatically turns on again, you’re putting undue strain on the internal components and raising the chance for a breakdown or repair call to Bryan’s Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.

HOT AIR RISES

You’ve made sure your heating system is up-to-date by changing the air filters every month and having Bryan’s Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. check it twice a year, but when your home has a forced-air system, the hot air is still going to rise. This natural occurrence means the upper floors and rooms in your home will be more comfortable longer than the ground level or basement.

BE MORE EFFICIENT WITH HEATING

To have an efficient home heating system, you’ll need to be proactive. But it isn’t a formidable task, especially when the following tips are done over time.

PROGRAM YOUR THERMOSTAT

The extra steps you take walking to change the thermostat in your home count toward your daily step goal, but they don’t make your home’s heating system more efficient. Programming your thermostat might cost you those steps, but it’ll save you a lot of money on your monthly heating bill, possibly 10 percent or more. That may not seem like a lot of savings, but once you add it up over the colder months in Wichita and over several years, the savings become apparent. The hard part is resisting the urge to adjust the program!

COVER WINDOWS & DOORS

Did you know that 25 percent of the heat lost in most homes is through the windows? Using a clear plastic film on the doors and windows that aren’t used during the winter is a great way to recoup some of the heat loss. The film comes in inexpensive kits that are readily available at home improvement stores. You can also use towels or heavy cloths to line the bottom of doors and windows that are used throughout the winter.

KEEP REGISTERS & VENTS CLEAR

If you decided to re-arrange furniture in a room, you likely considered sight lines to the TV, windows, or doorways. But did you consider if any heating registers and/or vents were covered up? Furniture and window coverings can’t disperse heat as it flows from the registers and vents, thus lowering the efficiency of your home’s HVAC system. Instead, be mindful of how the furniture is arranged, even if it means not having a direct view of the TV, and check those vents for lost toys and other objects that may have fallen in.
